Faculty of Science student receive prestigious UTM Chancellor Award at UTM 57th Convocation.


Faculty Science student, Ms. Claira Arul Arulldass is the recipient of the prestigious Chancellor Award at UTM 57th Convocation Ceremony today.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence acknowledges postgraduate students with outstanding performance. It is the highest honor bestowed upon a student by the University and is only bestowed to two students at every convocation.

Claira who passed her doctoral viva recently is a Chemistry major under the tutelage of Professor Wan Azlina Wan Ahmad from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science. She completed her research entitled ‘Violet pigment form Chromobacterium violaceum UTM5 grown in liquid pineapple waste and its antibacterial and cytotoxicity activities.

Sukacita dimaklumkan bahawa mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Pengurusan UTM Bil.8/2016 telah meluluskan skim Student Get Student. Skim ini dilaksanakan mulai 1 Mei 2016 dan ia adalah salah satu inisiatif bagi mempromosi program pengajian di UTM. Maklumat selanjutnya di berikut:

  1. Skim Student Get Student adalah terbuka kepada pelajar International UTM untuk membawa rakan mereka (calon pelajar International) menyambung pengajian di UTM bagi peringkat Ijazah, Sarjana, dan PhD.
  2. Insentif yang diberikan kepada pelajar International adalah dalam bentuk pengurangan yuran sebanyak RM 500.00 per calon pelajar International yang berjaya mendaftar pengajian dan telah membayar yuran pengajian semester pertama di UTM.
  3. Jumlah had maksimum pelajar International untuk menuntut skim ini adalah 3 calon pelajar International untuk pengajian Prasiswazah, dan 6 calon pelajar International bagi pengajian Pascasiswazah..

Student Get Student Scheme

UTM Management Committee (Bil.8 / 2016) has approved the Student Get Student scheme commencing May 1, 2016 to promote UTM study programmes. Details are as follows:

  1. The Student Get Student scheme is open to UTM International students to bring in prospective International students, to continue their studies at UTM for their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
  2. Incentives in the form of a reduction in fees of RM 500.00 are given to the International student for each International student brought in who successfully registered and paid the first semester of tuition fees at UTM. 
  3. This scheme is limited to a maximum of 3 prospective Undergraduate International students, and 6 prospective Postgraduate International students to UTM..

The standard operation procedure (SOP) for this scheme is as follows.

Faculty of Science awarded with Tier 5 status at AKA

Faculty of Science has been awarded with a Tier 5 recognition in Anugerah Kualiti Akademik (AKA) 2015 at UTM June 2016 Monthly Engagement Meeting today. The AKA is a coveted award by faculties and organisations within Universiti Teknologi Malaysia to mark their academic quality based on their achievements. Tier 5 status refers to an ‘Excellent’ rating.

 

Every year, such awards are presented  after candidates undergo rigorous assessments by a selected panel appointed by the Quality Award Committee Chairman with the approval of the Deputy Vice -Chancellor (Development ).

 

Prof. Dr. Norsarahaida Saidina Amin, dean of the Faculty of Science expressed her thanks to the hardworking group behind this success especially Dr. Abdul Rahman Tamuri and his team for preparing the documents for the AKA evaluation. The cooperation of the academic managers, head of departments, program coordinators, activity coordinators and all staff involved are appreciated as well. The attainment of tier 5 is a step up from the faculty’s last year’s status of Tier 4. In line with its mission and vision, this standing proves the faculty’s dedicated effort to achieve what it strives for.

Faculty of Science Professor awarded HIP2 Grant

Prof Dr Abdull Rahim  Mohd Yusoff from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science has been awarded High Impact Programme 2 (HIP2) grant through the commercialization of ‘Molluscure (Mollusk Toxic Metals Removal System)’.

Prof. Dr. Abdull Rahim, who is also the newly appointed senior director for UTM Ibnu Sina Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (ISI-SIR) and his commercial partner, Focus Industrial System Sdn Bhd received RM254,000 for this project. For the record, this is UTM‘s fourth research product to have received HIP2 commercialization grant since it was announced last year.

High Impact Programme 2 (HIP2) is a collaborative program between SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp) and Platcom Ventures Sdn Bhd (a subsidiary company of Agensi Inovasi Malaysia, AIM) that provides end to end facilitation and services (including financial assistance) for Malaysian SMEs to commercialize their innovation up to RM2 million. Congratulations to Dr. Mohd Bakri Bakar from the Chemistry Department on his appointment as the new Chair for the ACS Malaysia International Chemical Sciences Chapter.

The Americal Chemical Scociety (ACS) is a the world’s largest scientific society and one of the world’s leading sources of authoritative scientific information based in the United States of America. ACS is at the forefront of the evolving worldwide chemistry enterprise and the premier professional home for chemists, chemical engineers and related professions around the globe.

International Chemical Sciences Chapters allow ACS members outside of the U.S. to organize locally for professional and scientific exchange.  Currently, Malaysia is one of the 16 International Chemical Sciences Chapters.

Welcome New Students!

Faculty of Science student win at the 2015 Malaysia 3MT Competition

Ms. Nurul Ain Hussein, a PhD student from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science won first place in the Science & Technology category, at the National 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition, held at UTM KL recently.

Winning the award earned Ms Nurul Ain RM3000 in prize money.

3MT competition is a communication competition where PhD students pitch their thesis topic and its significance effectively in a mere of three minutes.

Other categories in the 2015 Malaysia 3MT include Engineering Category and Social Science Category. UTM bagged 4 awards including the “Best of the Best” awarded to Mr. Muhammad Jaysuman Pusppanathan (FKE, UTM). 16 Malaysian public universities participated in this competition.

At UTM, active PhD candidates who have successfully passed their confirmation milestone (including candidates whose thesis is under submission) by the date of their first presentation are elligible to participate in 3MT competition.
