About the ICOWOBAS
The International Conference and Workshop of Basic and Applied Sciences (ICOWOBAS) first took place in August 2007 in Surabaya, Indonesia, marking the beginning of a significant collaboration between Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Indonesia, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia. Following the inaugural event, the second ICOWOBAS was hosted in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on June 3-4, 2009, alongside the Regional Annual Fundamental Science Seminar (RAFSS 2009).
In 2017, the conference expanded its reach by being held at Salahaddin University in Kurdistan, Iraq, further strengthening the partnership between UTM, UNAIR, and Salahaddin University. The event returned to UTM in Johor Bahru in 2019 and has since evolved into a biannual event hosted alternately by the partner universities.
A new milestone was achieved during the 8th ICOWOBAS in 2021, when Tishk International University (Iraq) joined the collaboration. In 2023, Tishk International University hosted the 9th ICOWOBAS in Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq, in collaboration with Salahaddin University, UTM, and UNAIR, further cementing the ties between these institutions.
The theme for ICOWOBAS is “Innovative Science for a Smarter and Sustainable Future,” reflecting the event’s focus on fostering cutting-edge research and innovation. Looking ahead, the 10th ICOWOBAS will be held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor Bahru from May 5 to 7, 2025, organized by UTM’s Faculty of Science in collaboration with Tishk International University, Salahaddin University, and Universitas Airlangga. The program includes a workshop on May 5, followed by the conference on May 6-7.
We are delighted to invite scientists and researchers from around the world to join us for ICOWOBAS 2025 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and contribute to this important platform for advancing knowledge in basic and applied sciences for a smarter, more sustainable future.

Innovative Science for a Smarter and Sustainable Future
The theme for ICOWOBAS 2025, “Innovative Science for a Smarter and Sustainable Future,” underscores the pivotal role of scientific research and technological innovation in addressing global challenges.
