Applied Algebra and Analysis Groups (A3G), Nanotechnology Research Alliance, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Johor Bahru is pleased to announce that it is organizing a GAP Workshop on 18 & 19 April 2013 (Thursday & Friday) at Meeting and Presentation Room (C22-310), Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru, Johor.
BACKGROUND
Groups, Algorithms, and Programming (GAP) software is a computer algebra system that provides a platform to do computational discrete mathematics. Its primary purpose is to do computational group theory but it also can deal with many other algebraic systems including groups, rings and polynomials. The overall strategy is to have one system or platform where all of this computation can be carried out and data structures shared. The type system is fully dynamic so that an object’s type changes as more information about the object is collected. The GAP system contains a number of libraries and is extensible in that package can be written which provide functionality to the system. In this workshop, we will explore the GAP system, use the basic system distributed to make some interesting computations and write some GAP programs.

– Special Topic 1: Determining Homological Functors and Capability of Some Groups
– Special Topic 2: Determining Conjugacy Classes and Probability of Groups
– Special Topic 3: Determining Tensor Product and Compatible Action
– Workshop (The use of GAP in your research)
The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Mohd Sham Mohamad from Faculty of Industrial Sciences & Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Dr Nor Muhainiah Mohd Ali from Department of Mathematical Sciences, UTM Johor Bahru, assisted by some facilitators .
The workshop is limited to the first 30 participants who send their registration form with payment. The registration fee is RM40 (for A3G Member)/RM80 (for Non A3G member) which covers all meals and workshop materials (including a GAP book and GAP thumbdrive).
