JOHOR BAHRU, 21 July 2025 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), proudly inaugurated the much-anticipated Research Month@FS 2025 in a virtual ceremony officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shafinaz Shahir, Dean of the Faculty of Science. The event marks the seventh edition of the annual initiative to foster a vibrant research ecosystem within the faculty.

In her opening speech, Dr. Shafinaz expressed her sincere gratitude to all involved, particularly Assoc. Prof. Ts. ChM. Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam Nik Malek (Deputy Dean of Research, Development & Innovation) and Dr. Nurhafizah Hasim (Programme Director), for successfully organizing the programme. The event will run from 21 July to 12 September 2025, featuring a wide array of research-focused workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Dr. Shafinaz highlighted the importance of supporting young academic staff, with more than 70% of FS lecturers currently in the DS51/DS52 category and under 40 years old. The Research Month is seen as a strategic initiative to mentor and motivate junior researchers through exposure to publication writing, research grant application, intellectual property, and innovation development.

Among the notable activities lined up for this year include:

  • Research Book Writing Workshop: From Lab to Literature (23 July 2025)

  • Series of Book Writing Workshops

  • Publication Workshops

  • Grant and Intellectual Property Tours

This year’s programme gives special emphasis to academics who have yet to publish indexed journals in the past three years, secure external research grants, or develop edited books and IP-based products. The faculty aims to provide both skills development and an avenue to collect CPD points through these engagements.

The closing ceremony on 12 September 2025 will feature the 2024 Publication Awards and 2025 Engagement Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions in research and innovation.

Dr. Shafinaz concluded by thanking the Office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) UTM for their continued funding support and reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to fostering a productive research environment.
