Biography

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fong Wan Heng is an Associate Professor at Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), starting out as a lecturer in UTM in March 2008.

She received her undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications from UTM, namely B.Sc (Hons.) (Industrial Mathematics), M.Sc. (Mathematics), and Ph.D (Mathematics) with her doctoral thesis titled Mathematical Modelling of Splicing Systems.

Dr Fong’s major scientific contribution is in the area of splicing and sticker systems, particularly on the mathematical modelling and characterizations. In the past, she does research on the representation of automata over groups, restrictions in variants of splicing and sticker systems in order to increase the generative capacity of splicing and sticker systems in the Chomsky hierarchy. Her other research areas include variants of insertion and deletion of Languages in Formal Language Theory.  Recently, she is working on mathematical characterizations of DNA Splicing Languages for different sequences of restriction enzymes, as well as graphical models of splicing languages for DNA sequence assembly.

Dr Fong is a member of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society (PERSAMA), and Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
