UTM Faculty of Science Hosts Informative IP Application Sharing Session Benefiting Researchers and the Faculty

Johor Bahru, June 6, 2024 – The Faculty of Science at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) successfully held a “Sharing Session on IP Application” as part of the Faculty’s Research Year activities. The session, conducted at the UTM HELIxS C17 venue, aimed to provide in-depth knowledge on intellectual property (IP) and the process of filing for patents, benefiting both researchers and the faculty as a whole.

Under the leadership of Dr. Muhamad Najib Zakaria, and with the invaluable support of Dr. Nurul Aini Jaafar and Dr. Hazzirah Izzati Mat Hassim, the event featured presentations by esteemed industry experts. En. Mohd. Suhezey Shafie, Director of MyIPO Southern Region Branch, and En. Ahmad Fadzlee Rashid, Managing Director of IPVOLUSI Sdn. Bhd., shared their wealth of knowledge on the different types of IP protection and the application process for patents, instilling confidence in the audience.

The session proved to be an excellent opportunity for UTM researchers to gain vital information on how to protect their innovations and inventions through IP. By understanding the IP framework, researchers can ensure their work is safeguarded against misuse or infringement. Additionally, it opens up avenues for commercialization, allowing researchers to monetize their inventions and contribute to the university’s intellectual capital. Practical knowledge shared by the patent agent, En. Ahmad Fadzlee Rashid, on how to file for patents, equips researchers with the tools needed to successfully navigate the often-complex patent application process.

For the Faculty of Science, the program is not just a strategic initiative, but a source of pride. It bolsters the faculty’s reputation in research and innovation, showcasing the quality and originality of research conducted within the faculty. This not only strengthens its standing in both academic and industrial collaborations but also fosters a culture of IP awareness, positioning the faculty as a hub for innovation. This potential to attract funding and investment from industries seeking to collaborate with top-tier researchers is a testament to the faculty’s hard work and dedication.

Despite the modest attendance, the session succeeded in laying the groundwork for future IP activities at UTM. We acknowledge the low staff turnout, likely due to concurrent lecture schedules, and propose more promotional efforts and better coordination with academic staff planning to apply for IP protection in future programs. Your feedback and participation are crucial to the success of our future initiatives.

This program represents a key step in empowering UTM’s research community to protect their intellectual property, thereby enhancing the overall quality and impact of the university’s scientific contributions.
