ChM. Ts. Dr. Faizuan bin Abdullah and his team from the Faculty of Science at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have been honored with the prestigious Innovation & Product Commercialization Award for their groundbreaking project, “Molluscure – Bivalve Mollusc Toxic Metals Removal Technology.” This award, presented during the Citra Karisma 2024 at the UTM Excellence and Recognition Awards 2023, celebrates significant advancements in sustainable technology and research.
Molluscure® is an innovative technology developed to remove toxic metals from mollusks such as mussels, clams, and oysters, ensuring compliance with local and international safety standards. The technology, patented and commercialized under the leadership of Dr. Faizuan and his team, including Dr. Abdul Rahim Mohd Yusof, Dr. Wan Azelee Wan Abu Bakar, Prof. Madya Dr. Razali Ismail, and Dr. Ihsan Wan Azelee, represents a significant stride in environmental protection and food safety.
The project received a development grant totaling RM 500,000.00 from the UTM’s Centre for Research and Instrumentation (CRIM) and secured an additional RM 457,000.00 in commercialization funding between 2015 and 2016. Molluscure® has since successfully entered the market, effectively removing harmful metals from mollusks, thereby contributing to safer seafood consumption.
This award not only recognizes the technological achievements of Dr. Faizuan and his team but also underscores UTM’s commitment to fostering innovation that addresses real-world challenges. Dr. Faizuan’s leadership in the development and commercialization of Molluscure® sets a high benchmark for future research and development projects within the university and beyond.
Congratulations to Dr. Faizuan and his dedicated team for this remarkable achievement!
