The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), played a significant role in the recently concluded Knowledge Transfer Program on the “Diversity of Potential Plant Species and Their Role in Environmental Sustainability.” Organized by the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) in collaboration with UTM and Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, the program aimed to enhance community understanding of ornamental plant cultivation, environmental sustainability, and the importance of taxonomy in science.

The program was officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shafinaz binti Shahir, Dean of the Faculty of Science, UTM. She was joined by YM Ungku Ahmad bin Ungku Mohd Zakaria, Director of the MBIP Community Development Department, and Mr. Khairul Anwar bin Mohd Fuze, a representative from Sunway City Iskandar Puteri. Expert insights were shared by Dr. Farah Alia binti Nordin and Dr. Dahlia binti Shahbuddin from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), who highlighted the scientific and practical potential of ornamental plants.

The program successfully engaged nearly 170 participants, including undergraduate students from the Faculty of Science’s Bachelor of Science in Biology program, students from SK Taman Mutiara Rini, and residents from Rumah Anak Yatim Shafar.

Through close collaboration between government agencies, private sectors, and the local community, this initiative supported the implementation of Local Agenda 21 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), spearheaded by MBIP.
