The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), hosted another insightful session under its Science Seminar Series on Monday, 14th July 2025, featuring Distinguished Professor Dr. Michael C. Breadmore from the Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS), University of Tasmania, Australia.
Held at UTM HELIXs, C17, the seminar was titled “Scientific Publishing: An Outline of the Peer-Review Publishing Process and Tips from an Editor”, and ran from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. The event drew participation from early-career researchers, postgraduate students, and academics seeking to strengthen their publishing strategies. CPD points were also offered to attendees.
Prof. Breadmore, a highly regarded international authority in analytical chemistry, shared his vast experience as both an accomplished researcher and an editor. He currently serves as the Editor of Analytica Chimica Acta, and has previously held editorial roles with leading journals including the Journal of Chromatography A and Australian Journal of Chemistry.
In his talk, Prof. Breadmore provided a comprehensive overview of the peer-review publishing process, demystifying journal workflows, common pitfalls in manuscript submission, and practical strategies for improving acceptance rates. He also shared invaluable insights on manuscript structure, responding to reviewers, and selecting the right journal.
As Professor of Chemistry and Director of ACROSS, Prof. Breadmore has had an illustrious career with postdoctoral appointments in the USA, Switzerland, and the UK. His accolades include prestigious fellowships such as the ARC QEII (2009) and ARC Future Fellowship (2014). He became a Full Professor at age 38 and was awarded a Doctor of Science in 2017 for his impactful contributions to science.
With over 200 publications, more than 10,000 citations, an h-index of 51, and six patents—some commercialised by companies like deltaDOT, Trajan Scientific and Medical, GreyScan, and Eco Detection—his experience brought valuable real-world context to the seminar.
The Faculty of Science expresses its deepest appreciation to Prof. Breadmore for empowering the UTM academic community with knowledge that bridges research and successful scientific communication.
