Skudai, 22 July 2025 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), successfully launched the first installment of its workshop series titled “Building an Innovation Ecosystem in the Faculty of Science” on 22 July 2025 at Seminar Room, N31, Institute Ibnu Sina.

This inaugural session, part of the STAR LEAD program, was opened by the Deputy Dean (Research, Innovation & Development), Faculty of Science (TDPIP), and aimed to introduce key strategies in fostering a culture of innovation and research commercialization within the faculty. The event brought together researchers, academic mentors, and future innovators to discuss how strategic planning based on the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) framework can help translate academic research into impactful, market-ready innovations.

Highlights of the program included inspiring sharing sessions by STAR LEAD mentors Ts. ChM. Dr. Faizuan Abdullah and Assoc. Prof. ChM. Dr. See Hong Heng, who shared their experiences and best practices in research innovation. TDPIP also conducted two key modules: “TRL Commercialization Module” and “Roadmap of Research Innovation Based on TRL,” offering a structured approach to help researchers assess, plan, and commercialize their projects more effectively.

The workshop concluded with closing remarks by Prof. Dr. Madzlan Aziz, one of the lead mentors for the STAR LEAD program, who emphasized the importance of aligning academic innovation with national and global commercialization agendas.

This workshop series marks a significant step toward UTM Faculty of Science’s vision to cultivate a sustainable and forward-thinking research culture. Participants are expected to continue engaging in follow-up activities and mentoring sessions throughout the year.
