Johor Bahru, Malaysia – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), proudly congratulates Dr Yap Yung Szen from the Department of Physics on his selection as one of the Quantum 100, a prestigious global recognition announced in conjunction with the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025 (IYQ 2025), as declared by United Nations and UNESCO.

Dr Yap was selected from more than 400 nominations worldwide, placing him among a distinguished group of scientists, innovators, educators, and policy leaders who are shaping the future of quantum science and technology. This international honour recognises his significant contributions to quantum research, capacity building, and national-level initiatives that position Malaysia within the global quantum landscape.

Since 2024, Dr Yap has been actively engaged with key national stakeholders, including the Ministry of Digital, the Ministry of Higher Education, and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. His efforts have contributed to strategic quantum initiatives such as the establishment of the Malaysia Quantum Valley within the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), strengthening Malaysia’s readiness in emerging quantum technologies.

A founding member of the Malaysia Quantum Information Initiative (MyQI), Dr Yap also plays an important advisory role to government ministries and national agencies, while regularly delivering invited talks and knowledge-sharing sessions on quantum technology across universities, government bodies, and international conferences in Malaysia and the wider Asian region. He is also one of the organisers of the ASEAN Quantum Summit 2025, further underscoring his role in bridging research, policy, and industry.

This achievement marks a proud milestone for UTM and the Faculty of Science, reflecting the university’s growing leadership in frontier scientific fields and its commitment to advancing high-impact research with global relevance. Dr Yap’s recognition among the Quantum 100 not only brings honour to UTM, but also highlights Malaysia’s rising presence in the international quantum ecosystem.
