JOHOR BAHRU, 23 July 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), proudly congratulates Dr. Ahmad Qushairi bin Mohamad from the Department of Mathematical Sciences on securing a prestigious research grant from the Kurita Water and Environment Foundation (KWEF), Japan.
Dr. Ahmad Qushairi was awarded Japanese Yen 400,000 to undertake a one-year research project entitled “Machine Learning Analysis of the Mathematically Modelled Response of Microplastics in Seawater Flow Around Submarine Structures”, which will be conducted from October 2026 to September 2027.
The research aims to integrate advanced mathematical modelling and machine learning techniques to better understand the transport and behaviour of microplastics in complex marine environments, particularly around submarine structures. By analysing seawater flow dynamics and predicting microplastic movement, the study is expected to contribute valuable scientific insights towards marine pollution mitigation, environmental monitoring, and sustainable ocean resource management.
The project aligns closely with global efforts to address the growing challenge of microplastic contamination in aquatic ecosystems. The findings are anticipated to support evidence-based environmental policies and improve predictive tools for protecting marine biodiversity and infrastructure.
This achievement reflects UTM’s commitment to advancing impactful research through international collaboration while strengthening its position as a leading institution in science, technology, and sustainability.
