JOHOR BAHRU, 23 July 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), congratulates Dr. Rose Syuhada Basri from the Department of Biosciences on successfully securing a research grant from the Kurita Water and Environment Foundation (KWEF), Japan.
Dr. Rose Syuhada received funding amounting to JPY400,000 for her research project entitled “Design and Evaluation of a Locally Isolated Metal-Tolerant Bacterial Consortium for Heavy Metal Removal from Wastewater.”
The research, which will be conducted from October 2026 to September 2027, focuses on developing and evaluating a bacterial consortium consisting of locally isolated microorganisms capable of tolerating and removing heavy metals from contaminated wastewater.
Heavy metal contamination presents a significant environmental challenge because these pollutants can persist in aquatic environments and potentially affect ecosystems and human health. The proposed biological approach offers a potentially sustainable and environmentally responsible alternative for wastewater remediation by utilising the natural capabilities of microorganisms.
Through this project, Dr. Rose Syuhada aims to contribute valuable scientific knowledge towards the development of effective bioremediation strategies for treating heavy metal-contaminated wastewater. The findings are also expected to support broader efforts in environmental protection, sustainable water management and the advancement of green technologies.
The achievement reflects the Faculty of Science’s continued commitment to supporting impactful research that addresses environmental challenges and contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to clean water, sustainable communities and environmental conservation.
