JOHOR BAHRU, 22 July 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), successfully organized the AI-Assisted Journal Writing Workshop under its Publication Clinic initiative, bringing together academics and researchers to explore the responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific writing.
Held at Dewan Seminar Al-Dinawari, T02, UTM, the half-day workshop was conducted by Prof. Dr. Mohd Shahir Shamsir Bin Omar from the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, UTM. The session attracted researchers, postgraduate students, and academic staff seeking to improve their scholarly writing skills while leveraging the latest AI technologies.
The workshop provided participants with practical guidance on integrating AI-powered tools into the journal writing process, from literature exploration and manuscript structuring to language enhancement, data presentation, and publication preparation. Emphasis was placed on the ethical and responsible use of AI, ensuring that researchers maintain scientific integrity, originality, and compliance with journal and publisher guidelines.
Throughout the interactive session, participants were introduced to strategies for improving writing efficiency without compromising research quality. Real-world examples and demonstrations illustrated how AI can support researchers in organizing ideas, refining scientific language, identifying suitable journals, and responding effectively to reviewers’ comments.
The programme also highlighted current trends in scholarly publishing, including publisher policies on AI-assisted writing, best practices for transparency, and methods for ensuring that AI serves as a supportive tool rather than replacing critical scientific thinking.
This initiative reflects the Faculty of Science’s commitment to strengthening research excellence and publication quality in line with UTM Ascend 2030. By equipping researchers with modern digital competencies, the faculty continues to foster a research ecosystem that embraces innovation while upholding the highest standards of academic integrity.
The AI-Assisted Journal Writing Workshop forms part of the Faculty’s continuous professional development efforts to enhance research productivity, increase high-impact publications, and prepare UTM researchers to excel in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-enabled scientific communication.
