JOHOR BAHRU, 7 August 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), successfully organised Publication Workshop Series 1: Leadership Strategies for Research Groups and AI Applications in Academic Writing as part of Research Month @FS 2026 at UTM HELIX, C17, Faculty of Science.
The full-day programme brought together academic staff to explore two increasingly important dimensions of contemporary research: the effective use of artificial intelligence in academic writing and strong leadership in managing productive research groups.
The workshop featured Assoc. Prof. Ts. ChM. Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam Bin Nik Malek, who shared practical approaches to integrating artificial intelligence into academic writing. The session highlighted how AI-assisted tools can support researchers in organising ideas, improving writing efficiency, refining academic content and facilitating various stages of manuscript preparation while maintaining responsible academic practices.
The second session was delivered by Prof. Dato’ Ir. Ts. Dr. Ruzairi Bin Abdul Rahim, who shared his experience and perspectives on leadership strategies for research groups. The session emphasised the importance of clear research direction, effective team management, collaboration, mentorship and sustained research productivity in developing a successful research group.
Beyond individual research skills, the workshop highlighted the importance of building a research culture in which technology, leadership and collaboration work together to enhance scholarly productivity and research impact.
Through interactive sharing and practical examples, participants gained useful perspectives that can be applied to their own academic writing, research teams and scholarly activities. The programme also provided an opportunity for researchers to exchange experiences and reflect on strategies for adapting to the rapidly evolving research and publication environment.
Publication Workshop Series 1 forms part of the wider Research Month @FS 2026 initiative, which provides a platform for Faculty of Science researchers to strengthen their competencies in research, publication, innovation and professional development.
The Faculty of Science remains committed to supporting initiatives that empower researchers with contemporary skills and strengthen a collaborative, productive and high-impact research ecosystem at UTM.
