JOHOR BAHRU, 26 August 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), continued its Science Seminar Series 2026 with a seminar entitled “Mathematical Modeling of Adaptive Networks: From Biological Systems to General Principles.”

The seminar featured Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atsushi Tero from the Institute of Mathematics for Industry, Kyushu University, Japan, who shared insights into the mathematical modelling of adaptive networks and their relevance to biological systems and other complex phenomena.

Held at HELIxS, C17, Faculty of Science, UTM, the session introduced participants to how mathematical approaches can be used to understand networks that dynamically reorganise and adapt in response to changing conditions.

During the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tero discussed how patterns and behaviours observed in biological systems can inspire mathematical models capable of describing broader principles of adaptation, optimisation and network organisation.

The topic demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary research, particularly the integration of mathematics with biology, complex systems and computational science. Such approaches provide valuable tools for understanding how interconnected systems evolve, respond and optimise their structures over time.

The seminar also provided academic staff, researchers and students with an opportunity to engage with an international expert and gain broader exposure to emerging research in mathematical modelling and complex adaptive systems.

Through the Science Seminar Series, the Faculty of Science continues to strengthen its research culture by facilitating international knowledge exchange and creating opportunities for researchers and students to interact with scholars from leading institutions worldwide.

The programme also supports the aspirations of UTM Ascend 2030 by promoting global academic engagement, interdisciplinary research and the development of innovative approaches to addressing complex scientific challenges.
