JOHOR BAHRU, 1 October 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), congratulates Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Muhammad Safwan Abd Aziz from the Department of Physics for successfully securing the ASCEND Research Prominence Grant, with a total funding of RM149,000.
The funded research project, entitled “High-Value Rare-Earth Photocatalysts Derived from Locally Sourced Malaysian Centrium for Laser-Enhanced Sustainable Water Treatment,” will be conducted over a three-year period from 18 September 2026 to 17 September 2029.
The project focuses on developing high-value rare-earth photocatalysts from locally sourced Malaysian resources and exploring their potential for laser-enhanced sustainable water treatment. The research is expected to contribute towards the development of advanced materials and innovative technologies for addressing water treatment challenges while promoting the sustainable utilisation of local resources.
Securing the ASCEND Research Prominence Grant reflects the Faculty of Science’s continued commitment to strengthening high-impact research and supporting innovative solutions aligned with UTM ASCEND 2030. The project also highlights the important role of fundamental and applied physics research in contributing to sustainability and advanced environmental technologies.
