JOHOR BAHRU, 1 October 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), congratulates ChM. Dr. Nurul Nabila Rosman from the Department of Chemistry for successfully securing the ASCEND Research Prominence Grant, with research funding of RM149,166.

The two-year project, running from 18 September 2026 to 17 September 2028, focuses on developing advanced photoelectrode materials to improve solar-driven water splitting, a promising approach for producing clean hydrogen energy.

Officially titled “Interfacial Modulation of Direct Z-Scheme Bi₅O₇I/Fe₂WO₆ Heterojunction Photoanodes for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting,” the project investigates how the interface between two semiconductor materials can be engineered to improve their ability to capture light and drive water-splitting reactions.

In simpler terms, the research aims to develop more efficient light-responsive materials that use solar energy to split water and support clean hydrogen production.

Hydrogen produced using renewable energy has significant potential as a cleaner energy carrier. Improving the efficiency of photoelectrochemical water splitting could therefore contribute to future technologies for green hydrogen, renewable energy and low-carbon energy systems.

The project highlights the important role of materials and chemistry research in addressing global energy and sustainability challenges. It also supports the aspirations of UTM ASCEND 2030 by strengthening high-impact research with potential environmental and societal benefits.

The Faculty of Science congratulates ChM. Dr. Nurul Nabila Rosman on this achievement and wishes her and her research team every success in delivering impactful outcomes from the project.

Congratulations on this outstanding research achievement!
