JOHOR BAHRU – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), proudly congratulates ChM. Dr. Muhammad Amirul Aizat Mohd Abdah from the Department of Chemistry on successfully securing a research grant worth RM140,000 under the Exploratory and Transformative Research Grant (GET), Phase 1, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia.

The awarded research project, entitled “Elucidation of Electrochemical Kinetics and Oxygen Reaction in Rice Husk-Derived Activated Carbon-Manganese Oxide Cathode for Lithium-Air Batteries,” focuses on exploring sustainable materials to advance next-generation energy storage technologies.

The research investigates the potential of converting agricultural waste, particularly rice husks, into activated carbon-based materials combined with manganese oxide for use in lithium–air battery cathodes. By examining electrochemical reaction kinetics and oxygen-related reactions, the project aims to improve understanding of the factors influencing battery performance and efficiency.

Lithium–air batteries have attracted significant research interest because of their potential for high energy density. However, challenges involving reaction efficiency, stability, and electrode performance remain. This research seeks to address these challenges through the development and investigation of sustainable carbon-based electrode materials.

The project also highlights the importance of agricultural waste valorisation, sustainable materials chemistry, and clean energy technologies, supporting the transition towards environmentally responsible energy solutions.

The successful acquisition of this competitive research grant demonstrates Dr. Muhammad Amirul Aizat’s commitment to advancing electrochemical energy research and innovative materials development. This achievement further strengthens the Faculty of Science’s research excellence and aligns with UTM ASCEND 2030, particularly in promoting sustainability-driven innovation, impactful research, and technological advancement.

The Faculty of Science extends its heartfelt congratulations to ChM. Dr. Muhammad Amirul Aizat Mohd Abdah on this achievement and wishes him continued success in advancing research that contributes to the development of sustainable energy storage technologies.
