JOHOR BAHRU, 28 September 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), proudly congratulates Prof. Ts. ChM. Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam Nik Malek and his research team on winning the Silver Award at the MJIIX International Research and Innovation Competition 2026, held on 28 September 2026.

The award-winning innovation, entitled “Kesum-Silver Antibacterial Spray: Green Biosynthesised Silver Nanoparticles for an Industry-Ready Topical Formulation,” focuses on developing a plant-based antibacterial spray using silver nanoparticles synthesised through an environmentally friendly approach.

The multidisciplinary research team comprises:

  • Prof. Ts. ChM. Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam Nik Malek – Project Leader, Faculty of Science, UTM

  • Dr. Muhammad Hariz Asraf – HyaNovaX Sdn. Bhd.

  • ChM. Dr. Nor Suriani Sani – FKM, UTM

  • Dr. Khairunadwa Jemon – Faculty of Science, UTM

  • Dr. Azman Abd Samad – Faculty of Science, UTM

The innovation explores the potential of Persicaria odorata, commonly known as kesum or Vietnamese coriander, as a natural source of bioactive compounds for the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). These nanoparticles are being developed into a topical spray formulation with potential antibacterial applications.

Unlike conventional nanoparticle synthesis methods that may involve hazardous chemical reducing agents, the green synthesis approach utilises plant-derived compounds to facilitate nanoparticle formation. This strategy supports more environmentally responsible nanomaterial production while promoting the utilisation of locally available botanical resources.

A key highlight of the project is its emphasis on translating laboratory-scale nanotechnology research into a practical, industry-oriented antibacterial formulation. The proposed spray combines the antimicrobial potential of silver nanoparticles with a convenient topical delivery format, offering opportunities for further product development, formulation optimisation, and safety and efficacy evaluation.

The involvement of HyaNovaX Sdn. Bhd. further highlights the importance of university–industry collaboration in bridging the gap between fundamental scientific research and commercial applications. Such partnerships provide valuable opportunities to advance technology readiness, support product development, and explore future commercialisation pathways.

Beyond its technological potential, the innovation reflects the growing significance of green nanotechnology, sustainable biomaterials, and locally sourced natural products in developing value-added healthcare and hygiene solutions.

The Silver Award at MJIIX 2026 recognises the team’s innovative efforts in combining plant-based nanomaterial synthesis with product-oriented research. This achievement further strengthens the Faculty of Science’s contributions to applied research, innovation, and industry engagement.

The achievement also aligns with the aspirations of UTM ASCEND 2030, particularly in fostering impactful innovation, sustainable technological solutions, interdisciplinary research, and stronger university–industry partnerships.

The Faculty of Science extends its heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Ts. ChM. Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam Nik Malek and the entire research team on this achievement and wishes them continued success in advancing the Kesum-Silver Antibacterial Spray towards future technological development and potential commercial applications.
