UTM Hosts Delegation from Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), China, to Discuss Collaborative Research in Heavy-Ion Accelerator Technology

Johor Bahru, 3 September 2024 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) recently welcomed a delegation from the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP), China, and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) to explore potential research collaborations. The delegation, comprising Prof. Dr. Yuan Ping, former Deputy Director of IMP; Prof. Dr. Wei Wei, Deputy Director of Academic Affairs at IMP; and Prof. Dr. Ong Hooi Jin, Head Researcher at IMP, engaged in fruitful discussions with UTM’s Faculty of Science.

The visit, organized by the Department of Physics in collaboration with the Faculty of Science, focused on opportunities for joint research in the field of heavy-ion accelerator technology, covering both fundamental and applied sciences. Additionally, the discussions included the potential for postgraduate academic programs.

The event commenced with an official meeting chaired by Associate Professor Ts. ChM. Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam, Deputy Dean of Research, Development, and Innovation, Faculty of Science. This was followed by presentations from the IMP delegation, showcasing their facilities and research efforts, which were attended by academic staff and postgraduate students from the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

In the afternoon, a smaller group discussion took place between IMP representatives and UTM Physics Department staff. Dr. Koh Meng Hock represented UTM’s Department of Physics and provided an overview of the postgraduate programs and research groups at UTM. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the discussions and agreed on the importance of future collaboration.

The IMP delegation extended an invitation for a reciprocal visit by UTM staff to their facilities in China to further solidify the partnership. The visit marked an important milestone for UTM as it seeks to expand international collaborations in advanced physics research.

This visit not only strengthens UTM’s ties with international research institutions but also positions the university as a key player in the global scientific community.
