JOHOR BAHRU, 18 November 2025 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), proudly congratulates Dr. Nur Izzati bt. Mohd Noh from the Department of Biosciences for securing a UTM Fundamental Research (UTM-FR) grant amounting to RM70,000. This significant achievement celebrates UTM’s commitment to driving innovative research in biotechnology and sustainable materials.
Her project, titled “Modified Fatty Acid Degradation Pathway in Thermophilic Gloeocapsa sp. for High Yield of Long-Chain Polyhydroxyalkanoates (LCL-PHA) Biosynthesis,” focuses on enhancing the production of environmentally friendly biopolymers using thermophilic microorganisms. By modifying metabolic pathways involved in fatty acid degradation, the research aims to boost the yield of long-chain PHA—biodegradable plastics known for their superior mechanical properties and sustainable potential.
The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute to greener bioprocessing strategies, reduce reliance on petroleum-based plastics, and support Malaysia’s transition toward circular and sustainable bioeconomy initiatives.
