25 September 2024, Johor Bahru – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), hosted a significant meeting with the Consortium of Malaysian Universities (CMU) to discuss potential collaborations, especially with universities in the Shandong province, China. The meeting took place at the Al-Hazen Meeting Room, T02 Building, UTM, marking a pivotal moment in enhancing academic and research ties between Malaysia and China.

The meeting was led by prominent members of the CMU delegation, including:

  1. Dato’ Seri James Wong – Head of Advisor/Founder, Consortium of Malaysian Universities
  2. Ahmad Sofian Bin Mohd Nor – Chief Legal Officer, Consortium of Malaysian Universities
  3. Wang Kun – Director, Consortium of Malaysian Universities (China)
  4. Rong Rong – Assistant Director, Consortium of Malaysian Universities (China)

Representing UTM’s Faculty of Science were:

  1. Assoc Prof Ts ChM Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam Nik Malek – Deputy Dean (Research, Development, and Innovation), Faculty of Science, UTM
  2. Ts Dr. Safwan – Director of Laser Centre, UTM
  3. Mrs. Wong Yah Jin – Research Officer at Laser Centre, UTM

The agenda focused on strengthening collaboration between UTM and Shandong University through the establishment of a Laser Centre at Shandong University, China. The discussion also centered around potential joint research projects between UTM and universities in the Shandong province, facilitated by the CMU.

Dato’ Seri James Wong introduced the Consortium of Malaysian Universities and outlined its mission to foster academic and research partnerships across borders. The CMU, which includes a network of Malaysian universities, plays a vital role in facilitating international collaborations to advance education and research excellence.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing strong interest in pursuing future joint projects and academic exchanges. This initiative is expected to bring new opportunities for research and innovation, enhancing the global standing of UTM in the fields of science and technology.
