JOHOR BAHRU, 13 June 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), proudly congratulates Dato’ Dr. Bugs Tan Yeow Kiang on his appointment as an Adjunct Professor of the Faculty of Science, UTM, effective from 1 June 2026 until 31 May 2027.
Dato’ Dr. Bugs Tan is widely recognized as a distinguished leader in innovation, talent development, industry collaboration, and science policy. Currently serving as Science Advisor to the Office of the Deputy Chief Minister II of Penang, he plays a pivotal role in shaping strategic initiatives related to science, technology, innovation, and workforce development in Malaysia.
His appointment reflects UTM’s commitment to strengthening academic-industry-government collaboration and advancing knowledge translation to address national and global challenges. Through this role, Dato’ Dr. Bugs Tan is expected to contribute his extensive expertise in innovation management, technology commercialization, talent development, and strategic leadership to enrich the Faculty’s academic and research ecosystem.
With more than 25 years of professional experience spanning academia, industry, and public service, Dato’ Dr. Bugs Tan has built an outstanding reputation as an innovator and thought leader. He possesses a unique multidisciplinary academic background, holding a Doctorate in Business Administration, a Master of Business Administration, and a Bachelor’s degree in Education. His achievements have earned him numerous recognitions, including prestigious awards for innovation and invention.
Among his notable contributions is the development and commercialization of the Litewalk Grating System, an innovative technology that has gained recognition in the manufacturing and oil and gas sectors. His commitment to innovation has also been demonstrated through his active involvement in national initiatives that promote productivity, talent development, and industry-academia partnerships.
In addition, Dato’ Dr. Bugs Tan has been instrumental in advancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) through the Akademi Dalam Industri (ADI) programme, helping bridge the gap between educational institutions and industrial needs. His efforts have significantly contributed to strengthening Malaysia’s talent pipeline and enhancing workforce readiness for emerging technologies and future industries.
