JOHOR BAHRU, 1 October 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), congratulates Dr. Rahmah Mohd Lokoman from the Department of Mathematical Sciences for successfully securing the ASCEND Research Prominence Grant, with research funding of RM150,000.
The three-year project, running from 18 September 2026 to 17 September 2029, focuses on developing an advanced statistical framework to improve the assessment of future drought risks in Malaysia under changing climate conditions.
Officially titled “A Nonstationary GAMLSS Framework for Future Drought Risk Assessment under Climate Change in Malaysia,” the research will apply advanced statistical modelling to better understand how drought patterns and risks may change over time rather than assuming that historical climate behaviour will remain constant.
In simpler terms, the project aims to develop better mathematical tools for predicting future drought risks in Malaysia, taking into account the effects of climate change and evolving weather patterns.
The research is particularly relevant to Malaysia’s long-term resilience, as improved drought risk assessment can provide valuable scientific information to support water resource planning, climate adaptation, agriculture and disaster risk management.
By combining mathematical sciences with climate-related applications, the project demonstrates how advanced statistical modelling can contribute directly to addressing complex environmental and societal challenges.
The project also supports the aspirations of UTM ASCEND 2030 by strengthening high-impact interdisciplinary research and translating mathematical expertise into solutions relevant to national sustainability and climate resilience.
The Faculty of Science congratulates Dr. Rahmah Mohd Lokoman on this achievement and wishes her research team every success in delivering impactful outcomes from the project.
Congratulations on this outstanding research achievement!
