JOHOR BAHRU – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), proudly congratulates Dr. Mohd Farizal Ahmad Kamaroddin from the Department of Biosciences on successfully securing a research grant worth RM83,200 under the Exploratory and Transformative Research Grant (GET), Phase 1, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia.

The awarded research project, entitled “Elucidating the Relationship of Using Green Solvent and Physical Method in Algal Lipid Extraction of Locally Isolated Microalgae for Biodiesel Production,” focuses on developing environmentally friendly approaches to extracting lipids from microalgae for sustainable biodiesel production.

The research investigates the combined application of green solvents and physical extraction methods to improve the efficiency of lipid recovery from locally isolated microalgae. By exploring the interactions between these extraction techniques, the project aims to identify more sustainable and effective methods for obtaining algal lipids that can serve as raw materials for biodiesel production.

Microalgae have emerged as a promising renewable feedstock for biofuel production due to their rapid growth, ability to accumulate lipids, and potential to be cultivated without competing directly with conventional food crops. However, efficient and environmentally responsible lipid extraction remains a significant challenge in achieving economically viable microalgae-based biodiesel production.

Through the integration of green extraction technologies, microalgal biotechnology, and renewable energy research, the project seeks to contribute valuable scientific knowledge towards reducing the environmental impact of biofuel production while promoting the utilisation of locally available biological resources.

This research highlights the importance of sustainable biotechnology, green chemistry, and renewable energy innovation in addressing global energy and environmental challenges. The findings could support future developments in cleaner biodiesel production processes and contribute to Malaysia’s transition towards a more sustainable energy sector.

The successful acquisition of this competitive research grant reflects Dr. Mohd Farizal’s commitment to advancing innovative biosciences research with potential applications in renewable energy. This achievement further strengthens the Faculty of Science’s research excellence and aligns with UTM ASCEND 2030, particularly in promoting sustainability-driven innovation, interdisciplinary research, and impactful scientific discoveries.

The Faculty of Science extends its heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Mohd Farizal Ahmad Kamaroddin on this achievement and wishes him continued success in advancing research that contributes to sustainable biofuel technologies and environmental preservation.
