Johor Bahru, September 2, 2024 – As part of the Faculty of Science (FS) Research Year 2024, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) successfully organized a full-day workshop titled “Workshop on the Intellectual and Ethical Use of ChatGPT for Thesis and Article Writing.” The event, held at UTM HELIxS, C17, provided participants with an in-depth understanding of how to leverage ChatGPT effectively while adhering to ethical guidelines in academic writing.

The workshop was led by two distinguished speakers, Mr. Muhammad Mustaqim Roslan from EG Vision Online Sdn Bhd and Mr. Muaz Mubasyir Roslan, a PhD candidate from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). They shared insights into the advantages and risks of using AI tools like ChatGPT, particularly in crafting high-quality theses and research articles. The session also covered the ethical considerations, helping participants navigate the challenges of integrating AI-generated content while maintaining academic integrity.

For the Faculty of Science, the workshop provided an important platform to raise awareness about the responsible use of AI in research, ensuring that staff and students understand how to apply these tools without compromising the quality or authenticity of their work. The participants, which included academic staff and postgraduate students, benefited from hands-on sessions that showed practical applications of ChatGPT in organizing ideas, structuring research papers, and overcoming writer’s block.

The workshop was highly beneficial for both the faculty and participants, as it encouraged the adoption of advanced technologies in academic work while fostering a culture of ethical practices in research. The knowledge shared at the event is expected to improve the quality of academic output from UTM, positioning the faculty as a leader in ethical AI usage in higher education. With strong engagement throughout the day, the workshop proved to be an impactful addition to the Research Year 2024 initiative, helping to advance UTM’s research capabilities.
