Prof. Ts. ChM. Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam Nik Malek<\/strong>, Deputy Dean (Research, Development and Innovation), Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), brought postgraduate students together for a heartfelt conversation on redefining their roles within research environments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"659\" data-end=\"975\" class=\"\">Held under the theme <strong data-start=\"680\" data-end=\"746\">\u201cNot Just a Student: Becoming a Valuable Research Team Member\u201d<\/strong>, the session challenged students to go beyond the mindset of being passive learners. Instead, Dr. Nik advocated for a proactive, leadership-oriented approach\u2014positioning students as integral contributors in their research teams.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"1424\" class=\"\">A highlight of the session was the <strong data-start=\"1012\" data-end=\"1054\">case study of Dr. Muhammad Hariz Asraf<\/strong>, a former postgraduate student under Dr. Nik\u2019s mentorship. From his Master\u2019s work in biotechnology to completing a PhD and continuing with postdoctoral research, Dr. Hariz exemplified the pathway from student to independent researcher, successfully contributing to major projects such as green synthesis of antibacterial silver nanoparticles using <em data-start=\"1403\" data-end=\"1423\">Persicaria odorata<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1469\" class=\"\">Throughout the session, Dr. Nik emphasized:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1471\" data-end=\"2013\">\n<li data-start=\"1471\" data-end=\"1556\" class=\"\">\n<p data-start=\"1473\" data-end=\"1556\" class=\"\">\u2705 <strong data-start=\"1475\" data-end=\"1508\">Adopting a researcher mindset<\/strong> \u2013 seeing oneself as a co-creator of knowledge<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1557\" data-end=\"1639\" class=\"\">\n<p data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1639\" class=\"\">\u2705 <strong data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1593\">Supporting grant development<\/strong> \u2013 actively contributing to proposal writing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"1722\" class=\"\">\n<p data-start=\"1642\" data-end=\"1722\" class=\"\">\u2705 <strong data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1684\">Extending research beyond graduation<\/strong> \u2013 pursuing long-term collaborations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1813\" class=\"\">\n<p data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1813\" class=\"\">\u2705 <strong data-start=\"1727\" data-end=\"1758\">Mentoring and team building<\/strong> \u2013 guiding peers and fostering a positive lab culture<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1906\" class=\"\">\n<p data-start=\"1816\" data-end=\"1906\" class=\"\">\u2705 <strong data-start=\"1818\" data-end=\"1855\">Gaining project management skills<\/strong> \u2013 learning to organize and lead research efforts<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1907\" data-end=\"2013\" class=\"\">\n<p data-start=\"1909\" data-end=\"2013\" class=\"\">\u2705 <strong data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1944\">Building a research ecosystem<\/strong> \u2013 introducing ideas that promote innovation and synergy in the lab<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2266\" class=\"\">Students responded positively, engaging in questions over coffee in the welcoming setting of the Postgraduate Lounge.
