JOHOR BAHRU, 9 September 2026<\/strong> \u2013 The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), organised Book Workshop Series 3: Thesis to Book Publication with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP)<\/strong> as part of Research Month@FS 2026<\/strong>, providing academics and researchers with practical guidance on transforming postgraduate theses and research outputs into books suitable for wider publication.<\/p>\n Conducted online via Google Meet, the session featured YM Tengku Fauziah binti Ku Mat<\/strong>, Chief Editor, General Books Division, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP)<\/strong>, who shared valuable insights into book publishing at DBP, manuscript preparation, copyright considerations and the process of converting a thesis into a reader-oriented book.<\/p>\n The session began with an introduction to book publishing at DBP<\/strong>, including its publishing scope across the social sciences, humanities, science and technology. Participants were also introduced to different forms of publication, including works produced by individual authors as well as collaboratively authored books.<\/p>\n A major focus of the workshop was the important distinction between a thesis and a book<\/strong>. A thesis is written primarily to fulfil academic requirements and is usually structured around components such as research objectives, literature review, methodology, data, analysis and conclusions. A book, in contrast, must be reorganised to communicate knowledge in a form that is more accessible, engaging and meaningful to a broader readership.<\/p>\n Participants were shown that transforming a thesis into a book does not mean publishing the thesis in its original form. Instead, the content must undergo a process of adaptation and restructuring<\/strong>. Research material needs to be reorganised into coherent chapters, while highly academic or examination-oriented elements should be revised so that the manuscript reads naturally as a book.<\/p>\n The workshop illustrated how conventional thesis components can be repositioned within a book. The thesis abstract, for example, may be replaced by a preface and blurb<\/strong> that explain the purpose, scope, background and significance of the book. The research introduction can be rewritten as a more reader-friendly opening chapter, while the literature review, methodology, findings and discussion can be redistributed across thematic chapters that develop the subject progressively.<\/p>\n The materials also outlined practical methods for adapting thesis content. These include removing the formal statement of research objectives, revising thesis-oriented language, retaining only important quotations and references, reducing excessive methodological detail while preserving meaningful findings, dividing research results across appropriate chapters, and transforming the thesis conclusion into a stronger closing chapter for the book.<\/p>\n Another important aspect of the programme was copyright and publication ethics<\/strong>. Participants were reminded that copyright gives creators exclusive rights over their works and that authors must respect the ownership of material incorporated into a book.<\/p>\n The session highlighted that written permission may be required when reproducing illustrations, diagrams, photographs, quotations, tables, graphs and charts<\/strong> from other sources. Researchers were encouraged to address these issues early in manuscript preparation rather than waiting until the final stages of publication.<\/p>\n Examples of direct and indirect copyright infringement were also discussed, reinforcing the importance of ethical writing, proper attribution and responsible use of third-party material when preparing manuscripts for publication.<\/p>\n The workshop further introduced participants to the broader publishing and distribution process<\/strong>, demonstrating that successful book publication involves more than manuscript writing alone. Editorial evaluation, manuscript preparation, publication procedures, promotion, distribution and other publishing considerations collectively contribute to bringing a scholarly work to its intended readership.<\/p>\n A key message emerging from the session was that a thesis is written for academic assessment, while a book is written for readers<\/strong>. Therefore, authors need to rethink not only the structure of the manuscript but also its language, flow, narrative and presentation.<\/p>\n Transforming research into a book provides researchers with an opportunity to extend the value of their work beyond the examination process.
