Dr. Syazwana Binti Sapee, who shared complementary perspectives on translational research, product development, industry engagement and strategies for moving research outputs towards commercialisation.

A key theme of the session was the transition from research to commercialisation. Dr. PM Ridzuan highlighted that research impact should extend beyond academic publication by addressing real needs within industry and society. The sharing positioned translational research as a bridge connecting universities, industry, government and private companies through activities such as joint research, commissioned research, technical guidance, scholarships and other collaborative contributions.

The session also addressed several realities commonly faced in universities. While researchers are often highly experienced in fundamental and applied research, publications and innovation, they may have more limited exposure to product commercialisation, market development and industrial approaches. Strengthening these areas is therefore important if research outputs are to progress beyond the laboratory and create wider impact.

Dr. PM Ridzuan emphasised several reasons why research products should be commercialised. Research-based innovations can potentially create high-value products, improve quality of life, contribute to economic development and fulfil the broader responsibility of scientists to translate knowledge into useful solutions.

Participants were also introduced to a structured approach to developing research products. The process begins by identifying the classification of the intended product, such as pharmaceutical, health product, cosmetic or food. Product classification is important because different categories may require different development pathways, testing requirements and regulatory considerations.

The next stage involves product development, which may require collaboration with universities, research institutes, private research centres and relevant experts. Researchers were encouraged to recognise that product development is multidisciplinary and often requires expertise beyond the original research team.

Manufacturing considerations were also highlighted, including the need for appropriate production facilities, suitable equipment, laboratory support and, where relevant, manufacturing facilities that comply with appropriate quality requirements. Product specifications and quality assessments may involve laboratory testing, supporting documentation such as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Certificates of Analysis (COA), as well as further microbiological, safety or other tests depending on the nature of the product.

Complementing the technical commercialisation pathway, Ts. Dr. Syazwana Binti Sapee focused on the market-oriented mindset required to move research towards adoption.

One of the key concepts introduced was the value proposition. Researchers were encouraged to move beyond describing what their technology is and instead clearly communicate:

“We help [customer] solve [problem] by [solution].”

This approach encourages researchers to identify who actually needs their innovation, what problem the technology addresses and why the proposed solution creates value for the intended user.

Another important message was to engage industry early in the research process. Rather than following the traditional sequence of completing research, publishing the findings and only then looking for an industrial partner, researchers were encouraged to establish interaction with industry while the research is still being developed.

Early industry engagement allows researchers to receive feedback on product requirements, market needs and implementation challenges before development has progressed too far. This can help ensure that research outputs are not only scientifically strong but also relevant and practical for potential users.

The session further encouraged a shift from a purely “researcher mindset” to an “impact and market mindset.” Instead of asking only questions such as What did we discover?, Is it novel? and Can we publish it?, researchers were encouraged to also ask:

What problem did we solve? Is it useful? Who needs it? Who will adopt or pay for it? What evidence does the customer require? Who could be the first customer? What still needs to happen before deployment?

This shift does not reduce the importance of scientific quality. Rather, it broadens the researcher’s perspective by connecting scientific discovery with adoption, impact and market relevance.

Another major point was that researchers do not have to commercialise alone. Successful translation may require collaboration with the right partners, including investors, manufacturers, distributors, pilot partners, industry players, university technology-transfer organisations or spin-off companies.

The question for researchers, therefore, should not simply be “Can I do everything myself?” but rather “Who do I need to help bring this innovation to market?”

Through Sharing Session Series 3, Research Month@FS 2026 provided Faculty of Science researchers with practical insights into the journey from laboratory research to market penetration. The programme highlighted that successful commercialisation requires more than a strong technology—it requires appropriate product development, quality assurance, understanding of customer needs, early industry engagement, strategic partnerships and a clear value proposition.

The session reinforced the importance of viewing research outputs not only as academic achievements but also as potential solutions capable of generating economic, industrial and societal impact.

Through initiatives such as this, the Faculty of Science continues to strengthen a research culture that supports the translation of knowledge into innovative and sustainable solutions, in line with the aspirations of UTM.

#FSResearchMonth2026
#utmfsresearch
#ResearchCommercialisation
#TranslationalResearch
#Innovation
#IndustryEngagement
#MarketPenetration

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” type=”1_2″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_image src=”http://science.utm.my/utmfsresearch/wp-content/uploads/sites/642/2026/09/Poster-1.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”Poster” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”http://science.utm.my/utmfsresearch/wp-content/uploads/sites/642/2026/09/WhatsApp-Image-2026-09-10-at-9.35.54-AM.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”WhatsApp Image 2026-09-10 at 9.35.54 AM” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”http://science.utm.my/utmfsresearch/wp-content/uploads/sites/642/2026/09/WhatsApp-Image-2026-09-10-at-10.02.53-AM.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”WhatsApp Image 2026-09-10 at 10.02.53 AM” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”http://science.utm.my/utmfsresearch/wp-content/uploads/sites/642/2026/09/WhatsApp-Image-2026-09-10-at-12.26.45-PM.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”WhatsApp Image 2026-09-10 at 12.26.45 PM” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”http://science.utm.my/utmfsresearch/wp-content/uploads/sites/642/2026/09/WhatsApp-Image-2026-09-10-at-12.31.54-PM.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”WhatsApp Image 2026-09-10 at 12.31.54 PM” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”http://science.utm.my/utmfsresearch/wp-content/uploads/sites/642/2026/09/WhatsApp-Image-2026-09-10-at-12.36.41-PM.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”WhatsApp Image 2026-09-10 at 12.36.41 PM” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_image src=”http://science.utm.my/utmfsresearch/wp-content/uploads/sites/642/2026/09/WhatsApp-Image-2026-09-10-at-12.47.54-PM.jpeg” _builder_version=”4.27.7″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”WhatsApp Image 2026-09-10 at 12.47.54 PM” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

JOHOR BAHRU, 10 September 2026 – The Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), organised Sharing Session Series 3: “From Research Lab to Market Penetration” in conjunction with Research Month@FS 2026, providing researchers with practical perspectives on translating university research into products and solutions with real market potential.
