Dr. Nurrulhidayah Salamun from the Department of Chemistry on successfully securing a research grant worth RM117,000 under the Exploratory and Transformative Research Grant (GET), Phase 1, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Malaysia.

The awarded research project, entitled “Elucidating the Synergic Effects of Magnetic Activated Carbon Composite Beads from Polyethylene Terephthalate Waste for Removal of Doxycycline,” focuses on developing innovative and sustainable materials for removing antibiotic contaminants from water.

The research explores the conversion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste into magnetic activated carbon composite beads, offering a promising approach to addressing two major environmental challenges: plastic waste accumulation and pharmaceutical contamination in water systems.

By investigating the synergistic effects of activated carbon and magnetic components, the project aims to enhance the adsorption efficiency of doxycycline, a widely used antibiotic that can contribute to environmental pollution when released into aquatic ecosystems. The magnetic properties of the composite beads could also facilitate material recovery and reuse, supporting more sustainable water treatment technologies.

This research reflects the growing importance of waste valorisation, green materials, and environmental remediation in advancing sustainable technological solutions. It also highlights the potential of integrating materials chemistry with environmental applications to address emerging pollution challenges.

The successful acquisition of this competitive research grant demonstrates Dr. Nurrulhidayah’s commitment to advancing innovative chemistry research with potential environmental benefits. The achievement further strengthens the Faculty of Science’s research excellence and supports the aspirations of UTM ASCEND 2030, particularly in promoting sustainability-driven research, technological innovation, and impactful scientific discoveries.

The Faculty of Science extends its heartfelt congratulations to ChM.
