By examining how these nanoparticles affect bacterial metabolic pathways, the project aims to provide fundamental insights into their potential role in biological hydrogen production.

A key aspect of the research involves the application of proteomics, an advanced analytical approach used to study proteins and their functions within biological systems. Through proteomic analysis, the research seeks to identify changes in protein expression and metabolic pathways associated with exposure to green-synthesized silver nanoparticles. These findings could improve understanding of the molecular mechanisms influencing microbial hydrogen production.

Biohydrogen has attracted increasing scientific interest as a potential renewable energy carrier because hydrogen can produce electricity without direct carbon dioxide emissions at the point of use. However, improving the efficiency and sustainability of biological hydrogen production remains an important research challenge.

By integrating green nanotechnology, microbial biotechnology, and proteomics, this project offers an innovative approach to investigating biological energy production. The utilisation of banana peel waste as a resource for nanoparticle synthesis also highlights the potential of agricultural waste valorisation in supporting sustainable scientific innovation.

The research is expected to contribute new fundamental knowledge on nanoparticle–microorganism interactions, while providing a scientific foundation for future strategies to improve biohydrogen production. Its interdisciplinary approach demonstrates how nanotechnology and biosciences can work together to address emerging challenges in renewable energy research.

The successful acquisition of this competitive research grant reflects Dr. Siti Haslimah’s commitment to advancing innovative biosciences research with potential applications in sustainable energy.
