STEM Knowledge Transfer Program at SMK Pulai Jaya Ignites Student Interest in Forensic Science
Johor Bahru, 22 September 2024 — The Centre for Sustainable Nanomaterials (CSNano) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in collaboration with SMK Pulai Jaya, successfully organized a STEM Knowledge Transfer Program focused on forensic science. This initiative aimed to inspire and cultivate a passion for STEM subjects among high school students, especially in forensic science, by exposing them to real-world applications and potential career paths in science.
The one-day event, held at SMK Pulai Jaya’s Resource Centre, featured a variety of engaging activities including a forensic science seminar titled “Harnessing the Diversity of Science for Forensic Applications and Investigations,” led by Ts. Dr. Naji Arafat Mahat, Senior Lecturer at UTM. This session provided hands-on demonstrations of forensic experiments, capturing students’ curiosity and highlighting the relevance of biology, chemistry, and physics in forensic investigations.
Following the seminar, a career forum spotlighted various scientific fields, led by prominent figures such as Associate Professor Dr. Roswanira Abd Wahab and Dr. Koh Meng Hock. Through lively discussions, students gained insights into career opportunities in science, reinforcing the program’s mission to promote interest in STEM disciplines. The forum concluded with a science-based quiz that tested students’ knowledge and understanding of forensic science.
Pre- and post-program surveys conducted among the 88 participating Form 3 students revealed a notable increase in interest and comprehension of forensic science. The success of this program, supported by funding from UTM’s Centre for Community and Industry Network (CCIN) and contributions from CSNano and Bashob Analytical PLT, marks a significant milestone in fostering a future generation of scientists.
This program is a testament to UTM’s commitment to community engagement and educational outreach, helping students discover new scientific passions and explore potential STEM careers.
