UTM Experts Inspire with ‘Meet the Expert’ Series on Waste Management and Circular Economy
Johor Bahru, September 2024 — Petrosains PlaySmart Johor Bahru, in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), organized a series of educational talks under the ‘Meet the Expert’ program. The series, held at Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Johor, aimed to raise awareness about waste management and circular economy, targeting audiences of various age groups and backgrounds.
The event, which ran from July to October 2024, brought together notable UTM experts from the Faculty of Science, each presenting on innovative and sustainable approaches to waste management:
- Zaidah Rahmat (13 September) – Delivered a session on “Creative Ways to Manage & Reduce Scheduled Waste at School,” emphasizing practical solutions for educational institutions to contribute to a sustainable future.
- Prof. Dr. Shafinaz Shahir (14 September) – In her presentation, “Explore Waste Management and Circular Economy,” Dr. Shafinaz, Dean of the Faculty of Science, provided a broad overview of circular economy principles and their potential impact on society.
- ChM. Dr. Faizuan Bin Abdullah (14 September) – Spoke on “OIL2WANG: Used Cooking Oil (UCO) Circular Economy,” discussing the importance of repurposing used cooking oil as part of a sustainable waste management strategy.
- Huszalina Hussin (18 September) – Focused on “Peningkatan & Nilai Tambah Kualiti Sisa Makanan (Compost) melalui Penyelidikan & Pembangunan (R&D),” highlighting how composting can enhance waste quality and support agricultural productivity.
- Siti Salwa Alias (21 September) – Concluded the series with a talk titled “E-waste: Peranti kecil, Impak besar,” bringing attention to the environmental impact of electronic waste and how individuals and organizations can address this issue.
This program, held in conjunction with Petronas’ 50th anniversary and Petrosains’ 25th anniversary, reflects a joint commitment to fostering a cleaner, sustainable future. The sessions attracted numerous participants, encouraging the community to actively contribute to waste reduction and sustainable practices in their daily lives.
