UTM Researchers Revolutionize Forensic Science with Enzymatic Fingerprint Reagent at INNOVATHON

Researchers from the Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roswanira Abdul Wahab and Dr. Naji Arafat Mahat, are proud participants in INNOVATHON Season 2, showcasing their world-first invention – an enzymatic fingerprint reagent. Unlike conventional reagents that rely on chemicals, this innovative solution uses lipase enzymes as biosensors to detect fingerprint oils. Carbon nanotubes are integrated to provide vivid color contrast, offering a safer, eco-friendly, and efficient alternative to traditional methods widely used in forensic science. This groundbreaking approach not only enhances accuracy in forensic investigations but also prioritizes environmental sustainability. Their participation in INNOVATHON reflects UTM’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific innovation. Support Dr. Roswanira and Dr. Naji Arafat Mahat by voting for their innovative product in the Innovathon People’s Choice Awards at www.gempak.com/innovathon. Together, let’s celebrate local ingenuity and propel Malaysian innovations onto the global stage! 🚀

Be a Sustainable Citizen, Recycle With Oil2Wang™

Every year, nearly 50,000 tons of used cooking oil (UCO) are not managed properly, causing pollution that hurts the environment and requires high management costs from local authorities. The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) reportedly spent more than RM6 million in 2016 to clear blocked drains caused by cooking oil that had frozen in the pipeline from the house. A recent study of residents in Pasir Gudang, Johor was reported in the Journal of Critical Reviews in 2020, a survey conducted on used cooking oil among consumers in Pasir Gudang showed that many consumers are unaware that used cooking oil can be recycled. Only 7.6% of consumers recycle their used cooking oil. The remaining 92.4% disposed of the UCO into the sink, drain, or trash bin.
