The Composting Workshop by the Treasury Department (6 Oct 2025) was held at Block T02, Faculty of Science, UTM Johor Bahru, gathering 15 participants eager to learn how to turn daily food waste into compost fertilizer. The event began with opening remarks by Assoc. Prof. Ts. ChM. Dr. Nik Ahmad Nizam bin Nik Malek, Deputy Dean (Research, Innovation and Development), Faculty of Science, highlighting the importance of green initiatives at the departmental level to support UTM’s sustainability agenda.
Participants then gained insights from Dr. Azman bin Abd Samad, Department of Bioscience, Faculty Science on the fundamentals and benefits of composting, followed by Dr. Raihana binti Ridzuan who shared natural, chemical-free methods to prevent plant diseases.
The hands-on session led by Dr. Huszalina binti Hussin, Department of Bioscience, Faculty Science allowed participants to use their own household food waste and composting kits while testing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and pH levels for optimal nutrient balance.
The workshop successfully raised awareness of green practices, encouraged cost-saving through self-made compost, and supported SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) — aligning with UTM’s vision of a low-carbon campus and sustainable community.
