Message from the Head of Department

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Biosciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Our department is committed to excellence in education, research, and innovation. As one of Malaysia’s leading bioscience and biotechnology education centers, we strive to nurture scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and innovation while preparing graduates to meet the challenges of an increasingly dynamic, technology-driven world.

We offer a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide strong scientific foundations alongside industry-relevant training. Our undergraduate programmes include the Bachelor of Science (Biology) with Honours, Bachelor of Science (Biology Industry) with Honours, and Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) with Honours. At the postgraduate level, we offer the Master of Science (Biotechnology), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Bioscience, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Bioscience.

As a research-intensive department within Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, we are committed to advancing scientific knowledge through multidisciplinary research that addresses global challenges in human health, food security, environmental sustainability, and the bioeconomy. Our research integrates fundamental biological sciences with emerging biotechnologies to generate innovative solutions with real-world impact.

Our 46 academic staff members possess diverse expertise across a broad spectrum of biosciences, including molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, integrative omics, bioinformatics, proteomics, cancer biology, infectious diseases, environmental biotechnology, biosensor technology, industrial biotechnology, plant biotechnology, agrotechnology, animal biotechnology, nanobiotechnology, and biopharmaceutical sciences. Through strong collaborations with academia, industry, government agencies, and international partners, we translate scientific discoveries into practical applications that improve healthcare, enhance agricultural productivity, promote environmental sustainability, and support industrial innovation.

Our research activities are supported by modern teaching and research laboratories, dedicated technical personnel, and scientific facilities that provide an enriching environment for both education and research.
