Malang, Indonesia, June 23, 2023: Prof. Dr. Fahrul Zaman Huyop, has teamed up with the Biology Department at University Brawijaya in Indonesia for a joint research program. They will investigate the unique microbes found in the Lapindo mud volcano area of Surabaya, Indonesia. The Lapindo mud volcano, known as Lumpur Lapindo, is the world’s largest mud volcano and has been erupting since May 2006. The microbes in this area hold potential for biotechnology and environmental applications. Prof. Fahrul specializes in metagenomic studies, analysing the genetic material of environmental microbes. Previously, he researched archaebacteria in Turkey’s high salt Lake Tuz in collaboration with Dr. Yilmaz Kaya from Ondokuz Mayis University. This collaboration sets the stage for a future Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UTM and University Brawijaya. It will advance our knowledge of the microbial ecosystem in the Lapindo area and foster ongoing cooperation between the two institutions.
