SURABAYA, Nov 13 — Two students from Department of Biosciences, Faculty Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM): Abellyna Abraham and Alicia Lee Jia Wong supervised by Dr Nur Izzati Mohd Noh and co-supervised by Chm. Anthony Nyangson Anak Steven had completed a month-long research internship at Universitas Airlangga’s Research Center for Bio-Molecule Engineering (BIOME) in October 2025, where they gained hands-on experience in whole genome sequencing of cyanobacteria, mastering DNA extraction, sequencing with Oxford Nanopore’s PromethION 24, and bioinformatics analysis under expert mentorship. Beyond the lab, they joined BIOME’s BiomeFert community outreach in Banyuwangi, promoting biofertilizers to local farmers, and engaged in cultural activities including visits to historical sites and agricultural communities. The internship not only strengthened their technical expertise and appreciation for microbial genomics but also underscored the importance of socially responsible science that bridges cutting-edge research with sustainable community development.
