Our Year 2 students from the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology with Honours programme recently organized a Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) initiative under the course SSCT2703: Gene Expression and Regulation. The programme aims to nurture scientific curiosity, promote STEM education, and inspire the next generation of scientists among boarding school students.
This two-day programme combines an inspiring STEM sharing session with an engaging, fast-paced, two-hour interactive journey of hands-on learning in the captivating fields of genetics and biotechnology.
The program started on 15 June 2026 with an inspiring STEM Talk by renowned biomedical engineer and researcher, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Syafiqah Saidin, entitled: “FROM JOHOR TO THE WORLD: A STEM JOURNEY IN BIOENGINEERING – Exploring Innovation, Research & Opportunities Beyond The Classroom”
During her session, Dr. Syafiqah shared her personal journey from humble beginnings to becoming an internationally recognized biomedical engineer and researcher. Through her experiences, she highlighted the importance of perseverance, resilience, creativity, and lifelong learning in achieving success. She encouraged students to remain curious, embrace scientific thinking, and continuously seek knowledge, emphasizing that the skills developed through STEM education extend far beyond the classroom. Her inspiring message resonated strongly with participants: Be bold, be creative, and work hard.
The session also provided students with a glimpse into the exciting world of regenerative medicine through Dr. Syafiqah’s research in vascular regeneration, bone regeneration, and skin regeneration. These cutting-edge projects demonstrated how bioengineering and biotechnology are transforming healthcare by developing innovative solutions to repair and regenerate damaged tissues, ultimately improving patients’ quality of life.
The STEM journey will continue on Day 2 (18 June 2026), where students will dive into a series of interactive, hands-on booth activities exploring genetic concepts. We hope this immersive experience will ignite a lifelong curiosity, deepen their appreciation for the biosciences, and inspire these young, bright, and talented minds to explore rewarding future career pathways in STEM.
