Exploring Bioscience and Vermicomposting Innovation through the STEM Inspire StarSek x UTM 2026 Programme

The STEM Carnival held under the STEM Inspire StarSek x UTM 2026 Programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tasek Utara on 16 April 2026 successfully sparked students’ interest in science and innovation. The programme was a collaborative effort between the school and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to strengthen STEM education at the primary school level.

The carnival was officially launched by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shafinaz Shahir, together with the headmaster, Mr. Uzaini Abdul Razak. This was followed by the official launch of the Faculty of Science’s STEM Adopted School initiative.

In their officiating speeches, both highlighted the importance of STEM education in nurturing a generation that is knowledgeable, creative, and environmentally conscious.

Students had the opportunity to explore various exhibition booths. These included showcases from the Departments of Biosciences, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, and the STEM BRT FHE Unit. One of the most engaging exhibits was the bioscience booth themed around vermicomposting.

This exhibit was conducted by a team of researchers and lecturers from the Department of Biosciences, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nor Azimah Mohd Zain. Through interactive explanations and demonstrations, students were introduced to the process of decomposing organic waste using worms to produce environmentally friendly natural fertiliser.

Overall, the programme provided valuable exposure for students in understanding vermicomposting concepts while encouraging sustainable practices in their daily lives.
