Welcome to the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, UTM

Our programmes place emphasis on humanising students to become knowledgeable and competent in addressing and solving industry related problems through research and development activities in the field of chemistry. We are determined to holistically nurture and educate our students to be efficient and innovative with distinctive leadership qualities and compliance to standards of ethical conduct. All this, while equipping them to be responsible in engaging and contributing professionally towards environmental well-being and sustainable community. We are also engaged in New Academia Learning Innovation (NALI), a testament to our commitment to bring innovative teaching methods to the classroom, including active learning and flipped classrooms.

The Department of Chemistry offers undergraduate programmes i.e Bachelor of Science (Industrial Chemistry) with Honours and Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) with Honours. For postgraduate studies, we offer Master of Science (Chemistry) mixed mode, Master of Science (Forensic Science) mixed mode, Master of Philosophy (Chemistry) and Doctor of Philosophy (Chemistry). Our graduates are groomed for a variety of career paths including careers in the chemical industry and academia, among others.

Our department comprises of 37 academic staff members with excellent educational background in the field of Chemistry; each making up our four main Academic Panels, Analytical Chemistry and Instrumentation, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Each and every one of our academic staff are certified Chemists and member of professional bodies and societies; both national and international, including Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM), American Chemical Society (ACS), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), The Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ), Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (NZIC), Persatuan Sains Analisis Malaysia (ANALIS), Malaysian Natural Products Society (MNPS), Malaysian Nanotechnology Association (MNA), Malaysia Water Association (MWA), Malaysian Biosafety and Biosecurity Association, Forensic Science Society of Malaysia, International Water Association (IWA), Chromatographic Society (ChromSoc) UK and International Zeolite Association (IZA). Building on years of experience, these members serve as journal editors, journal reviewers, conference organizers, and are actively involved in outreach initiatives in the community.
