The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a dynamic department with an exceptional and enthusiastic faculty, active in undergraduate, graduate education and research. We are an integrated department of five main disciplines: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research.
History of the Department of Mathematical Sciences began with the establishment of the School of Science (PPS) in 1972 at Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur. Then, Mathematics was part of the teaching unit at PPS for the Faculty of Engineering at the National Institute of Technology (ITK).
1981: PPS became Faculty of Science (FS) and the establishment of Jabatan Matematik (Department of Mathematics)
1985: Jabatan Matematik started its journal. First publication of MATEMATIKA: Malaysian Journal of Industrial and Applied Mathematics started its publication.
1987: PPS offered Bachelor of Science in Industrial Science (SSI) degree program. Mathematics courses were also offered.
1988, Faculty of Science relocated Skudai Campus in Johor.
2011: Jabatan Matematik hosted the first Malaysian Mathematics In Industry Study Group (MISG 2011)
2012: Name change: Jabatan Matematik to Jabatan Sains Matematik (Department of Mathematics to Department of Mathematical Sciences)
2013: MATEMATIKA Journal managed by UTM Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (UTM-CIAM).
2018: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharidan Shafie appointed as Director of Mathematical Sciences
2021: Dr. Zarina Mohd Khalid appointed as Director of Mathematical Sciences.
