Crossing borders: A third year mathematics student in England

Starting from October 2019, third year undergraduate student from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, – Law Kah Yan began her studies at the University of Kent in England. The academic track that Kahyan is pursuing, enables a third year Industrial Mathematics undergraduate student at UTM to get another degree qualification in Actuarial Science from the United Kingdom, all within five years of study. This academic pathway is a testament of Faculty of Science strong relations with other universities abroad specifically in the United Kingdom. Kahyan receives financial assistance in the form of partial loan from Yayasan UTM to support her studies in Kent.

Prof. Abdull Rahim Mohd Yusof, Dean, Faculty of Science next to Law Kahyan (middle) and the academic staff at the Faculty of Science.

Based on her academic performance, Kahyan was shortlisted as one of the potential students for this academic pathway during her second year of study at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science . She successfully completed her industrial internship for three months at Bank Negara Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur and submitted her final year project whilst in her third year.

Upon passing all the related courses, she is expected to graduate from UTM with a BSc. (Industrial Mathematics) in July 2020 and then later graduate from the University of Kent with a BSc. (Actuarial Science) in July 2021.

Since arriving at Kent, she has made new friends, and of whom she describes as welcoming and kind. She has also recently joined the Invicta Actuarial Society, an Institute of Actuaries’ regional society for the Kent county. The society typically arranges open lectures, discussions and social meetings for actuaries and actuarial students in the area.

Math Undergraduate Students Compete At Simon Marais Mathematics Competition 2019

Johor Bahru, Oct 21.- Twenty-four of our UTM undergraduate students from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science participated in the Simon Marais Mathematics Competition on Saturday, 12 October 2019.

Simon Marais Mathematics Competition (SMMC) is an annual undergraduate mathematics competition for the Asia-Pacific region hosted by Simon Marais Mathematics Competition Ltd and supported by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute, Australian Mathematical Society Inc., The Hong Kong Mathematical Society and other international Mathematical societies. The aim of the competition is to encourage creative mathematical problem-solving among undergraduates in the region, covering eight Mathematics topics: Sequences, Series, Mathematical Induction, Real Analysis, Geometry, Linear Algebra, Number Theory and Probability Theory.

The last SMMC competition that UTM participated in was in 2016 with six entries. This year, we managed to round up a bigger group of 16 entries consisting of eight-single entrants (eight students) and eight paired entrants (16 students). The students are selected based on their excellent academic performance and their past experience winning medals at other Mathematical Olympiad competitions held this year.

In preparation for SMMC, the students had undergone a series of SMMC training under the guidance of  Prof. Dr. Ali Hassan Mohamed Murid, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mukhiddin Muminov, Dr. Niki Anis Ab Karim, Dr. Ahmad Fadillah Embong and Dr. Mohammad Izat Emir Zulkifly. We thank the trainers for their commitment in training the students after office hours, for four days in a week. Thanks also to the committee who managed the students including Dr. Norhaiza Ahmad and Dr. Siti Mariam Norrulashikin.

SMMC is generally conducted at participants home university and divided into two sessions, three hours closed book exam in the morning and three hours closed book exam in the afternoon. At UTM, the competition was held at the Faculty of Science and supervised by SMMC local coordinators Prof. Dr. Ali Hassan Mohamed Murid, Dr. Nurul Aini Jaafar and Dr. Niki Anis Ab Karim. Students answer scripts are then posted by snail mail to the organisers in Australia.

Students competing in the singles category of the Simon Marais Math Competition held at the Faculty of Science on Saturday 12 Oct 2019..

16 students in groups of two, participated in the Simon Marais Math Competition held at the Faculty of Science for the paired category on 12 Oct 2019.

Offered prizes for the competition is AUD100,000 in total prize money. The results are expected to be announced at the end of November 2019. All the best to UTM team!

The Group Chief of Data Science at AirAsia, Mr. Kong-Wei Lye met up with students from the Department of Mathematical Sciences last Thursday to talk about the company’s digital transformation. As part of this transformation, they are building up capabilities in data science. He emphasised on the importance of optimisation methods, predictive probability models and computer programming among others in various operations and solutions in businesses. Thus, graduates with background in statistics, operations research and applied mathematics are steadily growing in demand and can be regarded as commodities for companies that are heavily involved in digital operations today and the years ahead.
