WHO reported that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the top global public health and development threats. It is estimated that bacterial AMR was directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019, and contributed to 4.95 million deaths. The main drivers in the development of drug-resistant pathogens are the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in humans, animals and plants.
Faculty of Science, in collaboration with the Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Water Security – IPASA, American Chemical Society Malaysia Chapter, and Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) are organizing a joint seminar on this important topic. The multidisciplinary seminar will feature speakers from UTM and NUMed, on a range of key fields including medicine, genetics, chemistry, engineering and environmental sciences.
The confirmed speakers are:
Session 1 (video recording):
โ€œEmpowering Local Waterborne Disease Surveillance and Protectionโ€
Prof. Claire Walsh
School of Engineering, Newcastle University, UK.
Session 2:
โ€œTentative Suspected Screening and Identification of Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products Leading to the Appearance of Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria in Green Lipped Musselsโ€
Ts. Dr. Yong Ee Ling
Faculty of Civil Engineering, UTM; IPASA, UTM.
Session 3:
โ€œAntimicrobial Resistance in Clinical Settings: Case Studies in Myanmar and Malaysiaโ€
Prof. Dr. Edmund Liang Chai Ong
Department of Medicine
Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia; Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University Medical School, UK.
Session 4:
โ€œGenetics of Antimicrobial Resistanceโ€
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roshan Mascarenhas
